Alisher Usmanov was born on September 9, 1953, in Chust, Uzbekistan. The names of his parents are not known but his father was a state prosecutor in Tashkent. he has two sisters. He grew up in Tashkent with his father and later moved to Moscow in his attempt to pursue a career as a diplomat.


He attended the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and graduated in 1976 with a degree in international law. After his graduation, Usmanov returned to Tashkent and was appointed director of the Foreign Economic Association of the Soviet Peace Committee.
